Chapter 18

The Truth

"I want to know why you left your people, where you're going, and why." Frax was still furious, but at least his anger was under control now. "If you lie—if I sense you're holding back in any way—I'll let Tobin guide you toward the truth."

Off to the side, Tobin glowered at her palely.

She didn't understand his reaction. After helping these creatures out of a hopeless situation, all she'd gotten in return was this rage and mistrust.

Earlier on the trail, after shoving her against the wall and glaring at her as if he would choke the life out of her, Frax had returned to Tobin. It took several minutes for him to get the younger Geffitz to his feet, and even more time to bring him to some semblance of clear thinking.

Tobin had not shielded, Kaphri realized that as she stood there watching them. In the flurry of the attack, he either missed or ignored her mental warning. Her inexperience and the rush to save them made her unable to direct her mental aim tightly. The amount of peripheral pain his unshielded mind had received must have been a terrible shock to his system.

Truthfully, the strength of her sending surprised her, it had surged out in such a great wave.

Uri came back up the trail to assist. More than once, she saw him glance furtively in her direction as he tried to help the Geffitz scout. A tinge of regret ran through her but, not sure how to voice an apology, or if it was wanted, she silently clung close to the rock face with Gemma perched on her shoulder.

When Tobin seemed clear-headed enough to walk, Frax had ordered them onward, but the scout remained disoriented and needed help along the trail, making their progress slow.

Darkness closed in around them quickly. When it became clear they weren't going to arrive at whatever campsite they expected to make for the night Frax became more aggravated. He pushed them onward along the barely visible trail until Uri located a break in the cliff where they could take refuge for the night.

The crack extended back in a narrowing taper and opened above to the top of the cliff. Several feet back from the opening, the space widened enough to accommodate the four of them in loose upright sitting positions, but no one was going to stretch out. It was not a good refuge. The crevasse left them open to attack by another rock-climbing creature from the front or from above, but darkness made it impossible for them to continue up the narrow, treacherous trail. Also, with the bare rock, there was no plant debris for a fire, warmth, or light. Meanwhile, the rain continued to fall steadily on them.

After a short, shielded debate between the warriors, Uri, reached into his pack and withdrew a small, leaf-wrapped bundle he carefully unwrapped to reveal a round, nut-like object. Placing it on a flat stone in the center of the broadest part of the ravine, he raised a rock and brought it down hard on the object.
